Driving on a Revoked License

After a fender-bender the client fled the scene, scared of the consequences of driving on a revoked license. DDT reduced the charge to a misdemeanor and persuaded police not to charge the client's daughter, who had originally taken the blame.
Imagine you are having a normal day, living your life, and going about your business. Then your phone rings. It’s the police, asking you to come into the station to speak with them. You may be wondering, “What is this about?” Unless you already know.
The police called our client about an accident that had occurred near her home a few days earlier. Typically, the parties would exchange insurance, call the police if serious, and move on. It becomes a bigger deal when one driver doesn’t have a valid license, in our client’s case, revoked.
There are many ways for an Illinois driver’s license to be suspended: failure to pay tickets, five or more unpaid tollway/parking tickets, family responsibility or child support, failure to appear in court, civil judgments from uninsured accidents, refusing a breath test, blowing over .08 BAC, three convictions in a year (over 21), or two convictions in a year (under 21).
Our client had fled, fearful of the consequences. Her daughter had originally taken responsibility for the crash to shield her. Through careful work with the prosecutors, we reduced the charge to a misdemeanor and persuaded the police not to charge her daughter, a result that protected both mother and child from the worst consequences of a single bad decision.
